Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. My power works best in weakness. Mercy is all about not giving punishment or penalties to those who deserve them. Since God is merciful, we should also strive to extend mercy. The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. Here are a few examples from Scripture and what they have to do with the gospel.
Examples of Mercy in the Bible Joseph and his brothers: When Joseph met his brothers you know, the ones who sold him into slavery and told their father he was killed by a wild animal , he showed great mercy.
After testing what kind of men they grew into, he eventually revealed to them that he is their brother Joseph. At first they were terrified by this revelation, because they assumed his wrath would pour down. Go and sin no more. Mary: While Catholics esteem Mary too highly, Protestants are guilty of overlooking the grace that was given to Mary.
God chose Mary to give birth to the Son of God. Ephesians is probably the clearest single passage about this. In the midst of this terrible news, God steps in. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works so that no one can boast. Everything the Christian has is a gift of grace. The difference between grace and mercy is that mercy is not getting what we deserve.
But not only is God infinitely merciful, he is infinitely gracious. In his grace he not only withheld his wrath, but he positively saved us:. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God… Ephesians See the difference?
Gives us eternal life Adopts us as his children Makes us joint-heirs with Christ, gives us infinite riches in Christ Gives us his Holy Spirit Gives us power and victory over sin Lives in us Conforms us to Christ Causes all things to work together for our good Hears our prayers Gives us gifts of the Spirit Produces fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, etc.
Gives us good works to walk in He will never remove his love from us And someday we will see his face. He longs to pour it out upon us. God is lavish with his grace. He pours it out:. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us … Ephesians And he promises that for all who believe in him and call upon him so save them he will have mercy on them, forgive their sins and give them eternal life and lavish his grace upon them.
