Both Aswan and Luxor are set on the Nile River, with sandstone mountains and, frankly, sane rising above the lush, littoral city settings on either side. This is as much because of the mountains themselves as it is the treasures they hide. For example, once difference between Luxor and Aswan is that Luxor is where you find the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens and the temple of Hatshepsut.
Generally speaking, lodging in Aswan is a lot more byzantine than in Luxor, given that the latter is more popular than the former, due to its closer distance from Cairo.
On the other hand, both are home to big-named luxury hotels: Movenpick and Sofitel in Aswan; Hilton and Sofitel in Luxor. In terms of shopping, the Aswan Bazaar is larger and more expansive than what you find in Luxor, where individual boutiques tend to offer more interesting goods. The most popular excursion from Aswan is probably to Abu Simbel temple, which is rather far away and requires booking in advance for security reasons.
As you can probably tell after having read this far, both Aswan and Luxor are destinations of merit: Medium-sized cities set right on the Nile River , with plentiful attractions within their centers as well as within day-trip distance. At night in Cairo, you can walk along the Nile Corniche where boats are lit up and full of music. Luxor, on the other hand, is all about its temples and Nile sights. Keep in mind that Luxor gets very hot in the summer months, so if you plan to visit Egypt in that part of the year, consider choosing Cairo vs Luxor.
You can arrange your journey to stay for two to three days in each city. From Cairo, you can visit three main pyramid sites: Sakkara pyramid of Djoser , Dahshur and Giza three pyramids and Sphinx. If your budget allows it, you can rent a driver and visit all three necropolis in one day. Arm yourself with patience: the Museum tends to be very crowded at all times. A third day in Cairo may be devoted to visiting the Khan al-Khalili bazaar and the Islamic and Coptic neighborhoods of Cairo.
The bazaar is a major attraction for most travelers, and next to it is the Al Azhar Park and University, offering a panoramic view of Cairo and the prayers from hundreds of minarets at sunset. Crossing the Nile, on the West Side Bank, you can take a donkey ride to get to the Valley of the Kings, burial site for many famous pharaohs, including King Tutankhamun whose mummy is right there.
If your budget allows it, you can take a hot air balloon ride over the West Bank or hire a private driver for the day who will take you to the main spots. Cairo does have some nightclubs, e.
