Can i rap over instrumentals

Thread starter mguz11 Start date Jun 23, So i bought Blended Babies- Instrumental tape on Itunes Can I legally rap over this, and if not how do I get permission? EgO DoT New member. ProducerJC IndieHost. I put out 2 instrumental tapes for this vary reason.

However, I get about 10 emails a month with people using the same beat You can rap over it as long as there is no monetary gain from it. You'll need their permission for that. Ive tried it several times but with only poor results.

Perhaps paid for software can improve on this but ive not heard of anything that can do it perfectly and without tarnishing the track in anyway. Any software program that claims to do this does so by essentially removing the file's center information, which means that along with the vocals, you often lose everything else that's panned center kick and snare, bass, etc You're better off finding an instrumental.

Check YouTube or Amazon for a karoke version. Some ppl are under the impression that there is an instrumental version of every song made.

Not saying that you're one of them, but either way, there's not. Especially if it's by an "obscure" artist. The instrumental would have to exist in the first place before you'd even have a chance of finding it.

You could try taking part of the beat that has no vocals on it and then looping it. So what can a producer do if they don't like you using their beat? Well, the first thing they should do is order a cease and desist letter or email. This is basically them contacting you saying they expect you to take their beat off your mixtape as it is their property.

It'll also say if you don't they'll move forward with legal action. This is the first step they'd take if they've done their research and want to reach a close as soon as possible.

If you get a letter like this, it's advisable to take their material off your mixtape. The problem with this if you have a physical mixtape is you will have wasted money on pressing up a load of CDs that you can no longer use. If you have a digital mixtape however, this isn't as much of an issue. Simply take it off your website and anywhere else you have control of it. And be sure to reply to the letter or email letting them know that it will be done and again when it is done.

I know other people who have had producers ask for a cut of the mixtape where their beats were used without permission. In this case, your bet bet again is to take their material off your mixtape and let them know this is done.

This will avoid the potential headache it could bring. I know many rappers who use other people's beats on their mixtapes, and most have never faced anything like the above. That said, I also know a few who have experienced these issues. So it does happen. Well, essentially that's down to you. I've given you the facts above, but I can't tell you whether or not you should use existing beats out there.

While most rappers do use other producer's beats, it's down to you whether or not you wish to risk this yourself. What do you think, should other people's beats be used for mixtapes?

Above all though, if you have any semblance of being a sensible person you should NOT be asking sensitive legal questions on an internet music board. Advice: go see a bleedin' lawyer.

Edit for clarification: Sampling is legal as long as the original source is creditted and royalties are paid for. If there is zero profit made there is no royalty to pay for. Last edited by The Unfan; at PM. Originally Posted by The Unfan.
