And 10 years later, Steve's sitting by his bedside or he's saying, "God, take me, not him," you see how far that relationship has come and how close these two men are. That arc was really a big part of the success of the show; watching those two guys grow so fond of each other. That ingredient was always a part of the endgame for me, to really show how far they've come as a team.
I think McGarrett has always hit the ground running. We saw him in the pilot come in on a military plane land and hit the ground running, moving, always forward, never looking back. The idea of him leaving the island for a moment and decompress and get re energized and rejuvenated, and hopefully off-screen, I imagine people will hopefully believe that he'll come back at some point and spur a new chapter.
Maybe with a family with Catherine and maybe continuing to run the task force. Maybe not as hands on, but the idea was to have him in the Adirondack chairs sitting out with Danny, there's a lot of connected tissue to that first episode. I wanted to show how far everything has come. McGarrett has always suffered from post-traumatic stress. He played that over 10 years and it's finally caught up with him.
He needs a little bit of a break. I wanted to play a natural closure that felt real and honest, and I didn't want to manufacture a reason for the show to end.
I want it to end on something that we've been building to over 10 years and that felt like the right thing to do. McGarrett and Danny's conversation outside on the beach when they say their goodbyes was bittersweet, but the individual goodbyes the rest of the Five-0 team had for McGarrett was deeply emotional.
Was all of that all on the page? What was the hardest goodbye to craft? The goodbye scene with all the characters in the house, that was something that was more ad-libbed than anything. That was shot two hours after I told the cast and the crew that the show was not coming back for season So that was one take -- very raw and honest with no real edits.
Everybody in their own words saying goodbye, to not just McGarrett but to Alex and the rest of the show. So what you're seeing there is someone pointed a camera and let these people express themselves and release a real honest emotion with regards to the show ending. She returned for Kono and Adam's wedding in Season 5, while Season 6 played up her and McGarrett's inability to maintain a lasting relationship, and her returns in more recent seasons have been for one-off missions. Arguably best known for playing the time-jaunting lead in the fantastical drama Heroes , actor Masi Oka joined Hawaii Five-0 's first season as the always genial medical examiner Dr.
Max Bergman. While initially only a recurring role, Max and Oka were promoted to series regulars for Season 2, and over the years, his character's history and Halloween costume choices was explored, though much of his personal life remained offscreen, such as his marriage to Rumer Willis' Sabrina.
Even though Masi Oka vacated Hawaii Five-0 during the same season that fellow Asian actors Grace Park and Daniel Dae Kim did, Oka's exit was not tied to those contract negotiations, and was already planned whenever he made his final appearance in the thirteenth episode of the final season. According to the actor, part of it was because the character had run his course, and part of it was because he had personal issues to take care of.
Here's how he put it at the time:. I just thought the character went through a major journey. It got to the point where the producers were very gracious enough to — like we talked about it and we thought Max was entering his journey and they allowed me, kind of like for my health as well, to be able to take a reprieve from being on the show.
With everything about Masi Oka's exit planned, Hawaii Five-0 gave Max Bergman a winning farewell, with the character retiring from his medical examiner position in Honolulu and taking on a role within Doctors Without Borders. It was revealed Max would be returning to Africa for his new position, where he would also be celebrating life with his wife Sabrina.
Masi Oka has yet to make any return appearances on Hawaii Five-0 , but the actor did have a couple of small screen roles in the meantime.
He took on his next live-action role on Amazon's award-winning Mozart in the Jungle , and also voiced a character in the animated Supermansion: Summer Vacation Special.
As far as movies go, Oka appeared in the creature feature romp The Meg and will soon be heard in the animated Will Smith feature Spies in Disguise. Estranged from her brother at first, Mary Ann shows up and proves herself to be a problematic character, but one with room for redemption.
She later become a doting mother after adopting a daughter, Joan, which helped to strengthen her relationship with Alex O'Loughlin's Steve. While the specific details surrounding Taryn Manning's exit from Hawaii Five-0 don't seem to have ever come to light, the basic story is that the show's producers decided to go in a different direction with the central narrative as they went through Season 1.
It was reported that the creative team wanted to explore more of McGarrett's professional life, while limiting how his personal life was handled. Here's how Manning explained it herself at the time , speaking to her Season 1 stint getting short-changed:. The family mystery was supposed to slowly unfold over the first season and I was going to play a big part in that with my own Nancy Drew mission.
That's not to say that there were no reasons for her to leave at all, though. Fortunately, Park's Hawaii Five-0 departure cleared up her scheduled and allowed her the chance to take on another television opportunity. Park portrays Katherine Kim on the series, which follows a group of close friends as they cope with big life changes following the death of their mutual friend.
Not everyone might like her, and I thought that was actually quite a relief of pressure, that you didn't need to make your character funny or likable or cool or sexy or the lead. That struck a strong chord with me. Perhaps most importantly, A Million Little Things offers its stars the same treatment, according to Park: "They're going through a lot of steps to make sure we have the ensemble vibe.
