In , NJDOT estimated that it would take a decade before the state could afford to rehabilitate or replace the structure. The proposal was opposed by local politicians, who contended that it did not satisfactorily address the effect on local traffic and called for more thorough investigation into alternatives. The closure date was postponed by NJDOT to more completely work out comprehensive traffic and travel options. The roadway remained open through the use of alternate lane closures during the work until April 12, , affecting the 74, daily crossings.

While the narrow roadbed was suitable for the railroad industry, the design left something to be desired during the automobile era of increasingly larger vehicles. In recent years, critics have also claimed that the bridge's decking is outdated and rapidly deteriorating, although the black steel structure mounted on concrete beams is reportedly secure for the more than 85, vehicles that cross the Skyway daily.
Moreover, it had long been debated whether to rehabilitate the bridge or replace it. Neither is inexpensive. In January , the Department of Transportation announced its remediation for the year old Skyway. During its renovation, the northbound lanes that travel east to New York were repaired while the southbound lanes were opened for two-way traffic. The pattern was reversed to repair the southbound lanes. The plan, while inconvenient during construction, has preserved the iconic Skyway noted for its design and traffic connections.

There is a smooth transition from the approach spans, where the roadway is on top of the trusses, to the river spans, where the roadway is enclosed within the trusses.
Simply supported steel deck girder and stringer spans make up most of the low-level sections at each end of the structure. The exception to this is in Jersey City where three steel through-truss spans carry the roadway over railroads.
Two of the truss spans have a Pratt configuration, while the third span has a Baltimore Petit configuration. From an excerpt in the February edition of Public Roads : There is also every reason to believe that the traffic on the viaduct will increase during the next few years to a volume that could not have been adequately served by the old route. During a one-year period ending in September , the Bureau of Public Roads the forerunner to the Federal Highway Administration conducted a time study of delays between Jersey City and Newark, before and after the skyway opened.
The report determined that the new bridge attracted traffic that had previously avoided other routes because of congestion. However, the skyway itself soon became congested: it took motorists as much as 45 minutes between Manhattan and Newark Airport.
This ban was backed by the State Highway Commission in January and approved by local voters a month later. Truckers took the ban to court, citing that because the skyway was built in part with Federal funds, local authorities had no authority to restrict truck traffic.
